The Issue With Atheists

Here's a good question.

I haven’t heard that one before.

Peter Kreeft, in a recent interview with Jordan Peterson, made a splendid point about atheists.

If you ask atheists whether they at least would want there to be a God, even though they might think there is no such thing, most will say no.

Think about what that means.

The very explanation atheists give for the ubiquitous belief in some form of God across the ages and across cultures is that it supposedly consoles people, gives life meaning, is good for the group, etc.

Now, they might think it’s all nonsense. Fair enough. But wouldn’t they want there to be meaning in life, ultimate justice, higher goodness, some kind of sense in the cosmos?

It’s one thing to come to the conclusion that everything spiritual and religious which has to do with a higher being that we can get in touch with and that ultimately wants the best for us is simply delusional. It’s quite another thing to not want that.

Why would anybody not want it? I think many people are afraid.
